Having met with my disseration supervisor, Sam, last week my ideas for my dissertation are starting to take more shape.
For the moment my dissertation research question will be: What issues and opportunities does Sabah face as a tourist destination?
I am hoping to identify potential problems and opportunities for Sabah's tourism development and illustrate how various stakeholders plan to overcome such issues or achieve such opportunities. Hopefully with my research, I can also offer some recommendations for future development for tourism in Sabah. I have decided not to incorporate the local community in my research and instead research the stakeholders involved in Sabah's tourism development.
Good news - I may be able to go to Sabah this summer afterall! A family planned trip will also act as a dissertation research trip and I hopefully should be able to meet with various stakeholders whilst there.
The dissertation proposal due in just over a week will help to lay the foundations for my dissertation but if I am to visit Malaysia in July, I need to fully prepare my dissertation timetable and get most of my research done before my trip so that I am fully prepared for the interviews.
I am considering conducting phone itnerviews before I go to Malaysia and conducting one-to-one interviews whilst there to follow up any questions that may have come up between the phone interview and my time in Malaysia. I hope this will give me a more detailed insight into the stakeholder's opinions and may enlighten myself into some useful information.

It is good to see that you have finally managed to finalise your topic title and already have doen the research needed. Just to let you know that my Topic is pretty much the same examining the challenges facin Albania to become a successful tourism destination therefore I would reccommend you to look for the cooperation between public and Private sectors whioch are the key in development of tourism industry
I think it is a very worthwhile research topic, and it has been among others my favorit research area, however now I stick with my initial interest Saadiyat Island. As your supervisor is Sam, I think she also told you that you will have to interview quite many stakeholders. You said you would have some connections in Sabah's tourism sector which you could use. But I also found additional source of contacting people: www.xing.com. I am using this contact database since 1,5 years and have made the experience so far that members are very friendly and mix well. Members vary from all industries, from a normal employee to a manager in high position. Once you open an account there you can search for people with same interests, e.g. Sabah tourism industry or Malaysia tourism industry, and then contact these people. So I really would recommend to open an account and to make additional contacts prior to your visit to Sabah in July.
Good luck Coco!
the plan u made so far, sounds pretty good. To narrow down ur research area, u targeted the stakeholder but it would be more resourceful if u can talk to the locals and get their views, what i am doing for my research.
You might not include the interviews with the locals but can justify and compare with the views of the stakeholders. good luck.
